Search engine optimization is a crucial part of online marketing. If you want to succeed in the world of online marketing, familiarizing yourself with SEO is absolutely essential. However, a couple factors make it really difficult to become proficient in SEO. Firstly, search engines are constantly updating their algorithms and ranking factors, meaning that every new update has the potential to wipe out large parts of your web traffic. Secondly, SEO strategies are always changing, making it hard to find a good SEO strategy that works. To help get around these issues, here are 5 SEO tips that will help you become more proficient in SEO and gain a leg up on your competition.
Tip #1: Bigger Is Always Better
This is easily one of the most important SEO tip that you should always remember. It is very difficult, if not near impossible, to get onto a search engine’s front page with 200-word blog posts. Unless you have a site that already consistently makes the front page of Google, Yahoo, Bing, etc., low word content will not help you at all. Because search engines are competing against each other, each search engine wants to offer the best possible content on the first page to make sure their users have to click few links as necessary.
If you want to get ranked highly on a search engine, offering high word count content is the way to go. But of course, you do not want to just use a spinner for the sake of driving up the word count. Make sure you are putting out quality content. If you begin putting out lengthy, quality content you will find yourself ranking at the top much easier.
Tip #2: Target Long-Tail Keywords
Competition for keywords is stiff so you can forget about competing for common keywords. Long-tail keywords are keywords that have more than three words. This type of keywords are targeted, almost always have low competition, and have high conversion rates. So instead of targeting a keyword like “women’s clothing” you would instead target the keyword “blue pants for women” or “red women’s pants.”
Tip #3: Loading Speed Matters
With recent updates, search engines now include how fast a site loads in their ranking criteria. It would be a shame for you to create good content only to have your site penalized for not loading fast enough. Thankfully there are loads of free online tools that let you test how fast your website loads simply by typing in the URL. If your site out turns out to load slowly, don’t panic. There are many articles that deal with how to improve your website’s loading speed. So there is no reason for you to be held back by a slow loading website.
Tip #4: Create A Good Meta Description
A meta description is a short description of your site that is used by search engines to determine what your site’s purpose is. A good meta description is very important for getting your site ranked. Your meta description should be under 160 words and feature some of your main keywords. If you write more than a 160 words, most search engines will just cut off the description, so be concise.
Tip #5: Titles Tags Are Important
A “title tag” is basically the title of your article, blog post, etc. A good title tag is not hard to make. Firstly, you need to make sure that your title tag is short and concise. Secondly, your title tag needs to have the primary keyword in it, preferably at the start of the title.
