SEO 101: Understanding the Basics

If you’ve ever talked to an SEO expert before, you may have quickly become blank with all of the different words being used and explanations of how SEO works. Here’s a quick basic look at SEO presented in layman’s terms so that you can have a general understanding of what it is and how it works.

What is SEO?

SEO stands for search engine optimization. This means that you are optimizing your website so that the search engines can recognize it. When you see a site that is on page 1 for the words that you typed in, you can be sure that the person operating this website has been optimizing it. Google, Bing and other search engines are all looking for the best websites to put on page 1. When you can make this happen, you’ll see more sales and will make a higher profit.

1asdsQuality Content is Vital

If you’re using copy from another website you are going to be penalized by the engines. This is called duplicate content and is a definite no-no in the world of search engine optimization. Google wants to see fresh content that is useful and valuable to the person that is viewing your site. It needs to be relative to the purpose of your website and should contain good grammar and sentence structure. If you compromise on the quality of your content you’re guaranteed to remain on the lower pages.

Social Media

When you are a webmaster, you should also be connecting with others through social media. This gives you a chance to brand your product or service and build up a positive reputation in your field. Search engines do look to see whether you have a good social media presence in order to bring your site to the first page. Sites like Twitter, Google+, Facebook and LinkedIn are all great social media platforms that you should explore.

People Visiting from Other Sites

It’s not only a matter of getting your website on the first page of the search engines – you should also try to get visitors from other websites. You can set up links on other sites that visitors can click on to visit your homepage. This will bring you more traffic and is commonly referred to as backlinking.

When you set up backlinks on other sites, the search engines will recognize this, too, and will give you bonus points. These backlinks show that you are an authority because other sites are talking about you. You’ll have to make sure though that your links are placed on high quality sites otherwise, Google and the other engines won’t be impressed.

These are some of the SEO basics that you should know about when first starting out. There are some other things that are also important such as using the right words as content on the pages, including text with pictures, having a quick-loading site and making your website easy to navigate. When you put all of these factors together and optimize your site completely, the search engines will reward you with a higher placement that will lead you to that coveted first page.
