The Basics of Keyword Research

When you break it down from its most complex form, keyword research can be divided into 3 basic steps. Although there’s a lot more that goes into the research than these steps, this breakdown will show you the fundamentals of keyword research so that you can have a better understanding of it.

Finding the Right Keywords

This could be called both an art and a science. You need to find out what types of keywords people are typing on their keyboards in order to find what you have to offer. For example, somebody that is living in Melbourne that is looking for a dentist may type in “dentist Melbourne”, “Melbourne dentist” or “dentist in Melbourne”. These would be the 3 most common keywords phrases used but there are also thousands of others such as “root canal in Melbourne”, “Melbourne dental clinic”, “tooth clinics Melbourne” etc.

In order to find the right keywords and keyword phrases, you can use tools such as the Google Adwords Keyword Planner, Wordtracker and more. Some of these tools you’ll need to pay for while others are free. The tools will show you how many people are searching for the key words so you’ll know which ones are the most popular.

Competitive analysisResearch

Just because one keyword is more popular than another does not mean that it should be selected as one of your top keywords. You also need to look at the competition on the search engines to find out how difficult it would be to get your site into the top rankings for a certain keyword. Quite often you’ll need to start with a less popular keyword that has less competition and then work on the more competitive keywords later. It all depends on the type of site you have and the competition that you’ll be running into.

If, for example, you have a weight-loss site, it would be very difficult to get your site ranked on the first page of Google for the keyword “weight loss”. If you decide to have your main keyword as “lose weight in a week” you’d have a much better chance of getting your site noticed on the search engines with a high ranking. You’ll need to strike a balance between popular keywords and low competition.

Optimize Your Site and Your Pages

The home page of your site will be optimized based on keywords and keyword phrases that you’ve discovered using the tools listed above. As well, every page on your site should have its own set of keywords. This way, your site will get a lot more exposure based on the keywords you’ve chosen and as a result you’ll see more traffic coming to your site. More traffic generates more sales. It’s as simple as that.
